REVIEW

B.A. Pass: A neo-noir film with brilliant performances – must-watch!  -
B.A. Pass is based on a short story called ‘The Railway Aunty’ by Mohan Sikka that appeared in the anthology book Delhi Noir in 2009. Ajay Bahl (director-cinematographer-producer of B.A. Pass) loved the ‘pulp-fiction’ element present in the story and hence decided to take it up as his first directorial venture. He had earlier assisted director-cinematographer Santosh Sivan and worked as a cinematographer as well. A substantial amount of research was required to present an authentic feel to the film.

B.A. Pass follows the journey of a naïve young man Mukesh (played by Shadab Kamal) as he gets drawn into the world of male prostitution. Mukesh arrives in Delhi from small town India. It is a big move for him and the difference in environments is overwhelming at times for Mukesh. The reason he had to move to Delhi and live at his aunt’s residence was his parent’s sudden demise. His aunt was reluctant to take up this responsibility and leaves no chance to berate Mukesh. Sarika Aunty (played by Shilpa Shukla; remember Bindiya from Chak De India?), who is a friend of Mukesh’s aunt, makes sexual overtures to him.

Mukesh gets sucked into it and almost settles down into a regular routine of visiting Sarika at home while her husband is away. He also starts accepting a fee for services rendered. As they say you can’t have your cake and eat it too. The silver lining that Mukesh was beginning to spot in the horizon (he is responsible for his two younger sisters) quickly turns dark and eventually leads to his self-destruction and criminal foray.
Mukesh’s journey is layered and each layer unravels how Muskesh is fast approaching a point of no return. The film divulges a face of the Indian middle-class that is almost non-existent in mainstream media. Decadence is present in every strata of society, but certain get highlighted more than others. A number of objectionable things take place during the dark of night, but does nothing abhorrent happen behind closed doors during the day?

The over 300 million strong Indian middle-class; the educated and salaried section of Indian society; they are the ones championing change in 2013. They are the ones fueling political discourse, societal transformation, meritocracy and what not. Is there a Mr. Hyde lurking beneath this Dr. Jekyll? This film opines that it certainly does.

The real highlights of the film are the performances; even that of the support cast. Richa Chadda (remember her from Gangs of Wasseypur or the recently released Fukrey) was the original choice for the role that was eventually played by Shilpa Shukla. Richa is a brilliant actress, but I feel Shilpa was the right choice even if by default. She was perfect as the seductress – ferocious and full of oomph, ready to pounce on Mukesh once she had ascertained that he is vulnerable.
On the other hand Shabad Kamal as Mukesh is a bit underwhelming. His performance is not nuanced enough to portray the layers of changes his character is going through the film. He is good (and he was rewarded with a Best Actor award at the 2012 Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema, where the film had premiered), but not great. Among the support cast the performances of Rajesh Sharma as Sarika’s husband and Dibyendu Bhattacharya as the compassionate graveyard caretaker Johnny are the standouts.

B.A. Pass was made on a meager budget, but it doesn’t look or feel like a low-budget film – all thanks to Ajay Bahl. The cinematography of the film played an important role in making this possible. Ajay has managed to infuse an aesthetic richness in the film. The fact that Ajay Bahl has selected this premise for his debut feature speaks volumes about the director’s mindset. Yet he has not succumbed to the temptation of including explicit nudity in the film. His reasoning was that he wanted the film to be screened in India and nudity would have negated that possibility.

VERDICT: B.A. Paas is a classic neo-noir film, one of the few Indian films to live up to that tag. It is a must-watch film, not just to get glimpse into the underbelly of Indian middle-class but also to be treated to some sumptuous performances. The brilliant cinematography by Ajay Bahl is another reason to not miss this film.
