Story
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a 2013 Indian coming-of-age romantic comedy film, directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in lead roles.This is their second film together after their 2008 film Bachna Ae Haseeno. Aditya Roy Kapur and Kalki Koechlin play supporting roles.Madhuri Dixit appears in an item number titled "Ghagra" with Ranbir Kapoor in this film. Initially set for a March 2013 release, the film was released on 31 May 2013. Upon release, the film received positive to mixed reviews and was a huge box office success. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has become the fourth highest grossing Bollywood film of all time in India and worldwide. The film is also the seventh highest grossing Bollywood films in overseas markets.
Naina (Deepika Padukone) is a shy and nerdy medical student. She studies constantly and always tops her classes. An encounter with an old classmate, Aditi (Kalki Koechlin), makes her realise that she wants more from life than high marks. She makes an impulsive decision to follow Aditi on a commercial hiking trip into the Himalayas, up to Manali. During the hike, she renews her friendship with another former classmate, Kabir "Bunny" Thapar (Ranbir Kapoor). Bunny is a handsome charmer whose dream is to travel the world. He does not plan to marry or settle down.
In the course of the mountain trek, Bunny and Naina draw closer to each other. Bunny teaches Naina to laugh, to play, and to love. At the end of the trip, she is close to telling Bunny how she feels, but is interrupted by their friend Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur). He has searched Bunny's backpack and found a letter accepting Bunny to graduate school in journalism, at Northwestern University. Bunny explains that the trip is his last fling before he leaves. He will be sad to leave his friends, but happy to start a career that will lead to the travel of which he dreams. Naina realises that love and marriage form no part of Bunny's plans and remains silent about her feelings.
Eight years pass. Naina finishes medical school and works in a clinic. Bunny works as a television cameraman for travel shows and roams the world, as he had planned. They meet again in Udaipur, for Aditi's lavish wedding to Taran (Kunaal Roy Kapur), an awkward but adoring engineer.
Naina and Bunny are again strongly attracted to each other. Both resist love – Bunny because he does not want to give up a dream job he has been offered (as a travel show host), Naina because she fears that Bunny will break her heart again. On the last night of the wedding Bunny sees Naina with another man. She is rejecting the man ... but Bunny does not know that. Bunny and Naina meet, argue, and reveal their feelings by a kiss. Yet neither of them is willing to give up a career to follow the other. It seems that their romance is doomed.
The film ends on New Year's Eve, as Naina sits alone at home. Someone at the door ... Bunny! He has turned down the dream job, though he still plans to travel. Somehow they can make a life with two careers work, he argues. Naina agrees. Love wins the day.

Production
The film was produced by Hiroo Yash Johar and Karan Johar under the banner of Dharma Productions. It was co-produced by Apoorva Mehta. The title of the film was taken from a hit song by the same title, with music by R. D. Burman from film Jawani Diwani (1972). In December 2011, Pritam was chosen for first time to do the music for a Dharma Productions film, steering away from the usual Vishal-Shekhar and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who had previous scored director Ayan Mukherjee's debut film, Wake Up Sid (2009)
Filming
Shooting locations included Hadimba Temple, Gulaba, Banjaar, Hamta, and Naggar. Some shots were taken at height of 14,000 feet above sea level and the crew shot at a temperature as low as −10 degrees Celsius. In May 2012, the cast filmed in Udaipur, where Kapoor and Padukone also shot a romantic song. The unit then experienced a difficult shoot in Rajasthan due to the overwhelming heat. Filming also took place in August 2012 in Rue Mouffetard, a street market in the city. Other scenes were shot in Filmistan, Mumbai. On 26 January, the crew visited Kashmir to shoot a musical sequence and other scenes. They filmed in numerous locations such as Kongdori in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Srinagar.
Casting
Ranbir Kapoor was the first to sign onto the film, and is under Ayan Mukerji's direction for the second time following Wake Up Sid. Kapoor pierced his ears for his role in the film. There was a lot of speculation as to who would play the female lead, with Katrina Kaif, Asin, Parineeti Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma all being considered for the role. Eventually, Padukone was chosen in September 2011. Aditya Roy Kapur and Kalki Koechlin were later signed on for pivotal roles. Koechlin and Kapur play Aditi and Avi, respectively. Evelyn Sharma had confirmed that she will play a ditzy character.
Marketing
Nokia India announced its association with Dharma Productions for the film. The film's official trailer was released by Ayan Mukerji, Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone on 19 March 2013 at a press conference in Mumbai. Before its release, Ranbir Kapoor invited all of his fans to watch the trailer.
Release
Preview screenings of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani were held on 30 May 2013. The film was released on 31 May 2013 worldwide, and on around 3100 screens in India. The trailers of Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again, Satyagraha – Democracy Under Fire and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was attached with the film prints. Eros distributed Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in Israel. It was subtitled in Hebrew and released on 31 May 2013. The last Bollywood film released in Israel was Devdas. Hindu College organised a special screening of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in aid of creating a secure and safe environment for female students on 31 May 2013.
Controversies
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his displeasure over the attribution of shots in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to Manali while they were filmed in north Kashmir's Gulmarg.[48] He stated that apart from the temple and Span resort, all scenes were shot in Gulmarg. Many scenes and song sequences of the movie were shot at various locations in the Kashmir Valley including the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Karan Johar's production house later said that the opening credit slate clearly mentions Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Tourism Minister GA Mir and Inspector-General of Police SM Sahal. The names of the entire crew in Kashmir are mentioned in the credits of the film. The film's television release has been stalled. The Delhi High Court on 11 June 2013 issued a ruling restraining the TV release of the film for allegedly using objectionable dialogues in context of the brand Rooh Afza.
