Ramleela is an upcoming 2013 Hindi romantic-drama film directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It stars Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone as the eponymous leads. The film is said to be an adaptation of Shakespeare's epic love story Romeo and Juliet, set in violent times. The film will be released on 15th November, 2013.
Filming
Initially shot in Mumbai, some sequences of Ramleela were shot in Udaipur particularly at Udaipur palace and Gangaur Ghat where a song sequence was made. The story of the film is set in Gujarat. In Udaipur, Singh shot a song sequence in freezing cold water for about 45 minutes. Padukone was injured on set, however had to continue shooting as an expensive set was put up at Film City for a song. It was confirmed that Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Director of the movie has set up a gym on the sets in Filmcity Mumbai for the lead actor Ranveer Singh to not be late for the shooting and to avoid any delays could cause for the movie.
Casting
After several attempts by Bhansali to work with Kareena Kapoor had failed, she was initially signed on for Ramleela. However she walked out of the film citing date and monetary issues. Reportedly, Priyanka Chopra was cast as a replacement, however she was also replaced due to unknown reasons. Deepika Padukone was finally signed on for the film in August 2012, as confirmed by Ranveer Singh.
Singh, who is playing a Gujarati boy, had to learn some Gujarati abuses as well as gain muscle for his character in the film.[16] The first look of the film shows Padukone sporting a 30 kg ghaghra with a 50 metre 'ghera'. Richa Chadda of Gangs of Wasseypur fame is also signed on to play a significant role in the film,casting by Shruti Mahajan in the film whereas barkha bisht plays a supporting role opposite Abhimanyu Shekhar Singh (of Gulaal fame).
Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who previously worked with Bhansali in Black, was hired initially for the costumes of the leading lady, but was later replaced by Anju Modi. Maxima Basu is the costume designer for Ranveer Singh and rest of the principal cast. Maxima Basu has previously designed costumes for Peepli [Live]. Priyanka Chopra was confirmed for a special song in the film.
Deepika Padukone and I were destined to be cast together: Ranveer Singh
Ranveer Singh thinks he and Deepika Padukone were destined to be cast together as the desi Romeo and Juliet in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Ram Leela.
Actor Ranveer Singh, who has been in the news for his so-called romance link-ups with Deepika Padukone, says their chemistry in Ram Leela is a mainstay of the story.
"We were destined to be cast opposite each other. It's a chemistry between Romeo and Juliet. I hope it works as our chemistry is the driving force of the story," Ranveer told reporters.
But when he was asked about romance rumours with Deepika Padukone, he chose to keep mum.

Directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, "Ram Leela" is set to come out Nov 29.
Bhansali has picturised a lip-lock scene on Deepika and Ranveer.
When asked about it, the actress said: "I find it amusing when people ask me about lip-lock scenes. As an actor there is no difference between any scene. But when you are working with Sanjay sir, he makes even the simplest scene most difficult. He tweaks the scene in his mind."
Deepika Padukone moved to tears by Bhansali’s praise!
Deepika Padukone’s growth as an actress has been in leaps and bounds. From rusty performances at the start of her career, the actress has over the years won admiration of not just the critics but also people from the film industry.
Now, she’s won praise from a man not known to be generous with compliments. Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali reportedly lavished praise on Deepika on the last day of the shooting of Ram Leela. The actress filmed an intense scene and it so touched Bhansali that he couldn’t keep himself from complimenting her in front of everyone.
Hearing the praise coming from Bhansali, Deepika Padukone was visibly moved and broke down.
According to sources, “Deepika has put in a lot of hard work in Ram Leela and hearing the praise from Bhansali on the last day touched her deeply.”
The compliment was all the more special because the character of Leela that Deepika plays in the film is named after Bhansali’s mother and therefore very dear and special to him. He obviously wouldn’t be loose with compliments.
Ram Leela has Deepika Padukone pairing with Ranvir Singh. Deepika even took some scolding by Bhansali during the making, but praise at the end makes all the hard work worth it.
Priyanka Chopra shoots item song for Deepika Padukone’s ‘Ram Leela’
Priyanka Chopra is gearing up for her special track to be featured in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela. The actress will be seen in a desi garb for the song. But didn’t she deny doing the song a few days back?
After doing two special tracks in Zanjeer it seems the actress can’t get enough of dancing. Even though her item tracks had fewer takers, the makers of Ram Leela roped in the actress for the song, which is going to be shot in a lavish set-up.
Reportedly, the song will be choreographed by Vishnu Deva, Prabhu Deva’s talented brother, and the shooting is supposed to start today at Film City studios. A lavish and expensive set has been designed for the song and will feature 20 other female performers.
Now something about Priyanka Chopra’s item track in Ram Leela: Since the movie is based on Gujarati culture, and is set in Kutch, Priyanka will sport ethnic wear for the song, which may remind the audiences of Aishwarya Rai’s Nimbuda from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The song will include traditional elements and dance styles of Gujarat.
Earlier, there were reports that Aishwarya Rai was approached for the song in Ram Leela. Apparently, nothing materialized. At the launch of Lodha Group’s new project ‘The Park’, when Aishwarya was asked why the senior actresses are being offered just item numbers and not full-fledged roles in films, the actress apparently snapped at the reporter.
Ash replied, “I am an actor, don’t ask me these things, I am not the one making these (item song) offers. These are not the questions that can be directed at an actor.
Priyanka Chopra impresses 'Ram Leela' choreographer
After a rather lackluster 'Babli Badmaash', Priyanka Chopra has shot another item song and won praise from her choreographer Vishnu Deva.
Priyanka has finished filming for the special song for director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Ram Leela. The track was choreographed by Prabhu Deva’s brother Vishnu Deva who is going gaga over PeeCee’s dance moves.
Vishnu Deva tweeted: “Ram Leela 2nd song finished with Priyanka. She is a fabulous dancer and fun working with her.”
The song was shot at Film City studios. A lavish and expensive set was designed for the song and featured 20 other female performers.
Priyanka Chopra is presently eager to see the audience response to her latest release Zanjeer. She has been on a spree, promoting the film in various cities. Perhaps it’s because of all this hectic work that she’s gone under the weather.
“Bimaar.. Bukhaar..khaasi..zukaam! Ugh! But work beckons..here I am mumbai.. Groan groan.. Lets do this! Atchooo,” Priyanka Chopra tweeted.

If Deepika is a lively Leela, Ranveer as the village Romeo -- Ram -- is flamboyant and massy. He is a brave lad, who fights the world for his Leela, and yet stands by his clan at the cost of love. A thick moustache and long hair are Ranveer’s identity as Ram in the movie.

Both Deepika and Ranveer have worked really hard to get into the skin of the characters, and were trained religiously to do Garba in the movie, besides getting the nuances of being a Gujarati right.
